Bulgan Aimag (Province)

Bulgan logoBulgan aimag is located in the heart of Mongolia - Orkhon and Selenge basins bordering to Selenge, Tuv, Uvurkhangai, Arkhangai and Khuvsgul aimags respectively and to the Russian Federation for 160km border line. As the aimag is overall a mountainous area and it belongs to Khuvsgul, Khangai and Bulgankhan mountainious region. The aimag has many high mountains such as Khantai (2,000m above the sea level) and Buteel (1,800m above the sea level) at its north, Bureg (1,600 to 2,000m above the sea level) and other smaller mountains that are stretched along the latitude. The northern areas of the aimag are rich with granite from Mesozoic era, the vast southern territories are rich with Paleozoic and Mesozoic moraine and the central parts of the aimag are rich in lappilus from Jurassic era and trap stone from quaternary era. In 1967, there was an earthquake in Mogod sum forming many land splits that show the surface of this area has not been completely formed yet. Bulgan aimag is rich in resource of anthracite and other constructive materials. The aimag has many historical sites including the remains of the Bai-Balyk town of Uyghur state, remains of a Chinese town from 10-11th century which is at just east of Khar Bukh river, ruins of Tsogt Taij's mansion and the White Palace, Chin Tolgoi ruins, old military base ruins, remains of an ancient Mongolian town which is in Uvgunt and Emgent of Buregkhangai sum and Khugnu-Tarni monastery which is considered to be a historical gem.

Besides monuments belonging to ancient Mongolian states are plenty in this aimag including Turkic era monument in Mogod sum that is dedicated to the tax collector and the Altan Gerege or the Golden Paiz with Orkhon scripts which was found from the Khunnu graves. The Gerege's Orkhon Turkic script is not only invaluable to the Mongolian linguistics but also very valuable to Central Asian linguistics. Beautiful natural reserves and protected areas such as Eg-Selenge, Eg-Tarvagatai cross, Uran-Togoo, Khugnu Khaan Bulgan and high mountains such as Khantai, Avzaga Khairkhan, Bureg, Namnan, Zalman, Dulaan Khaan, Buural khaan, Ikh Baga Agt and Meej are the scenic spots of the aimag.
