Uvs Aimag (Province)

Uvs logoThe center of Uvs aimag, Ulaangom is located in the west of the Uvs lake, occupying 34km² of land at the elevation of 939m above sea level and is 1,336km away from Ulaanbaatar city. Many snow-capped mountains such as Tsagaan Deglii, Must, Tsagaan Shuvuut, also over 40 big and small, salty and fresh water lakes such as Uvs, Khyargas, Achit and Uureg that are abundant in fish and vast forests and steppes are in this aimag. The Uvs aimag is situated in westren Mongolia occupying the Khankhukhii, Kharkhiraa, Turgenii mountain ranges and the Gobi in the Uvs lake depression. The highest mountain is 4,116m high Kharkhiraa mountain. Kharkhiraa, Turgenii mountains are relatively young frowning mountains. Moraine from Mesozoic era is widely spread around the Khyargas and Uvs lakes. In addition, many other mountains such as Tsambagarav, Darvi, Baatar, Khukh Serkhiin range, Munkhkhairkhan, Jargalant, Sutai, Myangan Ugalzat and Altan Khukhii exist in the aimag.

The lowest point of Uvs lake area is 758.9m above sea level while the highest point is Kharkhiraa-Turgenii Mountains' peak at 4,126m above the sea level.

The aimag is located in the low lands of the great lakes (Great Lakes Depression). The total area of the surface water of the aimag is 3,350km². The length of the longest lake is 84km, and width of the widest is 79km. Sulphate and natrium concentrated Uvs lake is elevated at 759m. The Uvs lake is the largest lake in the country. Scientists have determined that the lake is over 200 years old. 38 rivers flow into Uvs lake including Tes, Nariin, Kharhiraa, Turgen, Borshoo, Sagil, Khundlun, Khandgai and Torkhilog.

Located at the boundaries of Malchin and Khyargas sums, Jinst Khadny cave that can fit about 600 to 800 sheep, 200m deep cave at Khatuugiin Mountain in Davst sum, Ulaan Chuluuny cave which can fit about 400 - 500 horses or 800 - 900 sheep at Undurkhangai, rock cliffs elevated at 3,000m above the sea level, that contains trails and fossils of ancient animals at Yamaat mountain in Bukhmurun sum are all part of the beautiful scenery of the aimag.

Border crossing points to Russia that are in this aimag are "Borshoo" in Davst sum and "Tes" in Tes sum. The national game animal reserve is located in Khar Yamaat of Bukhmurun or alternatively called as a home land to the Ibex mountain goats. Hunters from all over the world pay a visit to this place.
